<b><font color=yellow size=4>Thank You</b></font> After 'The Shave'
April 2 2003
I have had a few days to work out what having my hair shaved means to me and mine, and to those who stand outside and judge.
I was so proud of the unconditional love and support shown by my family and friends. At the moment of my hair being cut from my head, I am told there was total silence. I was not aware, as I was in a cocoon of shock, I think, knowing only what was happening to me.
My daughter shared with me, and my husband Gary - a very shy, private person - in solidarity with me, stepped up to the public stage and had his hair shorn as well - a true measure of their love!
I am still amazed at the ingrained reflex of eyes averted from me while walking in public. Some people obviously know why I look so naked in public, and eyes light up, and I get a big comforting smile and nods of the head.
But these are far outweighed by the people who have issues with my hair style - or lack of it.
I would not presume to guess why they have such a problem with my lack of hair, but they are certainly judging my appearance, and are so brainwashed that they can not get over it! Even if the feeling is of sympathy, thinking I am ill, then the proper response should be a comforting smile for those people really in need of such caring! It should never be a flick of the eyes then dropped aside, or, worse, actually overlooked as if you are invisible!
I don’t think I really look sick, I believe that prejudging is alive and well (not in Stanthorpe I must say) and I have tasted the discomfort.
Those who have actively supported me in the months of this campaign, I list below and say a heartfelt 'thank you'. I would have given it all away as too hard weeks ago without the unstinting encouragement, lots of hugs and the donations of goods, services and money, that made the whole exercise worthwhile.
